We love to think about holidays or weekends that leave fun memories. But sometimes we face unpredicted risks of acquiring HIV. AHF Jamaica has got your back. You can find more about PEP.
What is PEP?
PEP is a treatment that can prevent HIV after potential exposure. It’s not a cure for HIV, but it’s highly effective if you start it within 72 hours of exposure. PEP works by stopping the virus from taking hold in the body, and clients must take it every day for 28 days to be effective.
Common situations where PEP is recommended include:
- Unprotected sex.
- Sharing needles or syringes.
- Possible exposure through sexual assault.
If you think you might need PEP, it’s crucial to act fast. PEP will work only 72 hours after the exposure.
More alternatives for you
If any of the above situations occurred to you or a loved one, but it happened more than 3 days ago, there is so much more you can do. HIV does not have to be a nightmare, and there is timely treatment for STI’s.
